Thoughts on Disenchantment?

It's Matt Groening's style of humor when he's allowed to write. Just look at Groening's work prior to The Simpsons. It's a dry sort of funny, not fall off the couch laughing funny.

Bean is a mash up of "human female Bender" and Leela. I find Elfo more annoying than anything and Luci is just a caricature of Bender's bad side in demon form.

Luci is wasted cause literally already had a Bender for the show. Also Eric Andre is garbage at voice acting. Matt Berry is worth all of Futurama's voice cast combined though. Also Noel Fielding was there for a bit but he was meh at it.

Elfo is an obnoxious Fry, Bean is what happens when you try to make a show with Leela as the lead, and Luci is a flat and boring Bender.

Groening peaked. The show is just SJW whitewashed Futurama, and shows it painfully.

sjw whitewashed
i dont know how you could possibly come to that conclusion unless you watched it on mute or just didn't watch it.

they went too far with her butterface, his art style isn't nuanced enough so she just looks like a dewd. also green bort
20 Name: Anonymous 2018-09-22 18:58
Yeah figured it was kinda bland and dry. There were some awkwardly silent parts.

The entire premise is the main character being a "strong, independent, tough" female lead and the first episode beats that dead horse into the ground. It's unfunny, boring, and destined to fail.

no. the problem is it's a thumbnail.

it's about her not being any of those things though.

Have you watched the show?

It was amusing. Although I only watch it stoned.

Yeah, have you?

it's the big bang theory tier comedy (well to be honest nothing can be that bad, but it's pretty much there) with "slight" cultural enrichment and equality quotas mixed in
it's shit tier compared to futurama
28 Name: Anonymous 2018-09-22 19:33

it is fine
29 Name: Anonymous 2018-09-22 19:34

It's not as good as futurama was. It has potential though.
30 Name: Anonymous 2018-09-22 19:39
its fine, not more not less
31 Name: Anonymous 2018-09-22 19:43
It’s 60% bland shitty storytelling, 10% relatively clever parody, and 30% decent comedy.

It’s not great but I do enjoy it. I’d hesitate to recommend it, but I wouldn’t call it a bad show.

Simpson was only good for the first 10 seasons. Futurama sucked all the way through especially at the end, sappy, unfunny show. Disenchantment is a limp, unfunny show and like most Netflix shows is just another stupid "high concept" effort like The Good Place or Santa Clarita Diet.

There are worse shows out there that people probably watch.

first 10
like 3-8

I get an occasional depressed heh out of BBT.

I remained stoneface through all 10 episodes of Disenchanted.

Weak start, seems like midway through they got a better understanding what they want to do with each character. I think it has promise up until Bean's mother.

It's a character driven show except none of the characters are likeable.

It can't be plot driven either, because there is no plot.
37 Name: Anonymous 2018-09-22 20:13
I watched all 10 episodes hoping and praying to heathen gods I no longer believe in that the show was going to get better, it didn't.
38 Name: Anonymous 2018-09-22 20:19

Unlikeable characters can be good. There's a bit of world building and setup stuff but it feels like the first couple eps of a series.
39 Name: Anonymous 2018-09-22 20:26
I loved it but I was high as a kite the entire time.

I could watch a section of fence for 6 hours high and love it .....

Had potential, but fell short. Hopefully the next season will step it up. A lot of the jokes didn't land for me personally.

I've seen one clip from it and immediately figured out it was garbage.
43 Name: Anonymous 2018-09-22 20:33

but anon watching one clip and making a judgement only makes everyone judge you and your opinions as shit

Watched it because I started watching it.

Futurama voices and plot. Basically about women rights.
Woman humor.
Meh.

not funny

It commits the only unforgivable sin in art: it's boring.

Good art, bad art... but NEVER boring.

Simpson's was really good up until the early 2000s. It was okay until the movie, then it took a downward spiral.

Futurama was gold up until it got canned. Then the movies were okay and got better with each one. Then the reboot kinds straggled for a season until it found it's place until it ended shittily.

Disenchantment struggles from an identity and character problem. It's trying super hard to not be Futurama or the Simpson's to the point where it cripples the show. All because or creative pride. The few times they do revisit that level of comedy the show is at it's best.

As the characters go. Bean is a drunken moron who has little to nothing in common with the viewer. All she does is get drunk and fuck around. But she's not a blue collar family man like homer was. And she's not an endearingly stupid and lovable slacker like fry was. Not to mention the other two primary characters are tiny and pointless.
One is a demon that just enables her bad behavior (and that's fine) but elfo also enables her bad behavior too.

The rest of the cast of secondary characters is pretty decent but they're just secondary cast. I hope they at least become something like Amy, Hermes, Scruffy and Zoidberg were and have their own complex plotlines.

If the second season bombs hard I guess I won't ever watch it again.

Not like there's anything else to watch anyways. I crunch new shit out in days anyways. Then O just go back to watching old south park, Family guy, Simpson's, Futurama anyways.

Basically a team drove a truck load of cash to Groeing's house and the resultant anger-bang was Disenchanted

So far it's pretty "meh" but it has potential. I figure part of the problem is it's not an episodic show, which (AFAIK) is new territory to Groening.

not good, id rather watch steven universe or johnny test instead of snoozing through another episode of that shit.

Matt is a senile cuck. I wish we got something like Red Dwarf, minus the laugh track.

Too much continuation. Futurama was good because every episode had something crazy and different happen yet it still had character progression. These shows are better when each episode has a distinct plot. Bojack Horseman and season 17 of South Park were the only comedy American cartoons that were able to pull it off.

It's ok overall; the first half is fairly meh but it kept me mildly entertained on a long car ride. It gets stronger near the end; if that trend continues it could turn out to be worthwhile. S1 Simpsons was kinda shit too after all.

It's an unfamiliar format for the creators, we'll see if they get their shit together and adapt.

I'm not terribly hopeful tho, the main characters don't seem very well thought out.

I think the idea behind Bean is to create a relatable character for millennials, by someone who has no fucking clue what's relatable to millennials.
