The Black Cats will welcome the chance to put Saturday's heavy defeat at Rotherham behind them, with tonight's game against Darren Moore's side likely to be another tough test.

The Owls were regarded as promotion candidates before the season started, and while things haven't quite gone to plan so far, they will be a difficult side to beat on home turf.

Sunderland will be without Aiden McGeady of course, but Lee Johnson says he will pick a side he knows he can rely on.

Lee Johnson made three changes to his starting line-up in response to Sunderland's 5-1 weekend mauling at Rotherham.

Aiden O'Brien came into the side in place of the suspended Aiden McGeady, who was serving a one-match ban following his red card against the Millers.

And Lynden Gooch replaced Leon Dajaku, who dropped to the bench.

The third change saw Corry Evans start in place of Elliot Embleton, and the addition of the extra central midfielder meant Johnson also switched to a 4-3-3 system.

There was also a surprise inclusion on the bench, with on-loan Everton forward Nathan Broadhead named among the subs in his first matchday involvement since suffering a hamstring injury in the Black Cats' 5-0 win against Cheltenham Town at the end of September.

And Alex Pritchard had also recovered sufficiently from the neck injury which kept him out at Rotherham to be included on the bench.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore also made three changes, in his case to the side that drew 2-2 at Cheltenham at the weekend.

Florian Kamberi, Theo Corbeanu, and Lewis Wing came into the side in place of Jack Hunt, Olamide Shodipo, and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.

Sunderland: Hoffmann, Winchester, Flanagan, Doyle, Cirkin, Evans, Neil, O'Nien, Gooch, Stewart, O'Brien

Sheffield Wednesday: Peacock-Farrell, Palmer, Dunkley, Johnson, Paterson, Adeniran, Wing, Bannan, Corbeanu, Kamberi, Gregory
