Sunderland AFC vs Wycombe Wanderers [League One]

Sunderland AFC vs Wycombe Wanderers [15:00 BST]

The Black Cats have won three of their four league games so far, and followed last weekend's victory against AFC Wimbledon on Wearside with a Carabao Cup win against Championship side Blackpool in midweek.

This afternoon they face Gareth Ainsworth's Wycombe, who came within a whisker of survival in the Championship last season before their relegation was confirmed on the last day of the campaign.

After making seven changes in midweek for the Carabao Cup win at Blackpool, Lee Johnson reverted to virtually the same side that began last weekend's home win against AFC Wimbledon in the league.

The only change from that game Sunderland boss Johnson made against Wycombe Wanderers was the return of Dennis Cirkin at left-back, with midfielder Alex Pritchard making way.

That meant Dan Neil, who had played left-back against the Dons, moved back into midfield alongside Luke O'Nien, who was passed fit to play against his former club despite suffering a recurrence of an ongoing shoulder problem last Saturday.

With Neil opertaing in one of the deep-lying midfield slots, Elliot Embleton moved into the number ten role that had been occupied by Pritchard.

Goalkeeper Anthony Patterson kept his place in the starting XI after being promoted from the bench just before kick-off against the Dons when Lee Burge picked up an injury in the warm-up.

Burge was included on the bench.

Also on the bench was Aiden O'Brien, who scored a hat-trick in the 3-2 win at Blackpool.

New signings Niall Huggins and Frederik Alves made their debuts in the game at Blackpool, and they were on the bench this afternoon.

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth made three changes to his side's starting XI in their last league outing, which saw them beat Lincoln City last weekend.

Ryan Tafazolli, Sullay Kaikai, and Anis Mehmeti, came into the side in place of Anthony Stewart, Garath McCleary, and Nick Freeman.

Former Sunderland midfielder Josh Scowen, who was released over the summer, lined up against his former club.

Fixture reminder: No date has been fixed for Sunderland's EFL Trophy game against Man Utd U21 as yet.

And next Saturday's League One game at Sheffield Wednesday has been postponed due to international call-ups.

So as it stands, Sunderland's next game is at home to Accrington Stanley on Saturday, September 11 (3pm)

Sunderland will make a late check on Luke O'Nien before deciding whether he is ready to face his former club Wycombe Wanderers.

The versatile midfielder has an ongoing problem with a dislocated shoulder which flared up again in last weekend's win against AFC Wimbledon, although Sunderland's medical team were able to put the joint back in place at the side of the pitch so he could complete the game.

Boss Lee Johnson has already said that O'Nien is likely to need surgery at some stage to have the shoulder pinned, but is hoping to put off the operation until the summer.

palace are so shit. We can barely string together any passes and there is no threat in the final third. Defence has been shit and we could easily be down 3-0 rn.

Guaita has been ok
my nigga TYRICK has been decent
Guehi has been shacky
Andersen is invisible
Ward saved a goal but he's shit
McArthur has been shit and keeps giving up the ball
Kouyate has been fine
Gallagher has been one of the best, lots of energy and constantly pressing
Wilf doesnt look like he wants to be here, we should have cashed out on him and invested it into some quality players
Benteke and Ayew have hardly touched the ball it seems and now that Benteke has a new contracrt you just know he isnt gonna score any time soon

its been a good run in the prem but i dont have high hopes and i wouldnt be surprised to see a relegation fiight with arsenal

They already have way more passes than arsenal had in their entire game. They are amazing compared to arsenal, at least there's that.

Many of them had 1 year deals left, others looking to retire or move on. He saw the writing on the wall. It's not even a "project" at this point, it's a mass upsell and rebuild
