Port Vale vs Sunderland [EFL CUP]

Port Vale vs Sunderland (19:45 BST)

While promotion from League One will be the only priority for Lee Johnson and Co this season, continuing their winning start to the campaign can only be a good thing.

Johnson is likely to rotate his squad tonight, with Alex Pritchard in with a chance of making his Black Cats debut.

Sunderland have one or two injury concerns, with the likes of Aiden McGeady and Ross Stewart potentially sitting out tonight's game.

Lee Johnson made eight changes to the side that started the weekend League One opening day win against Wigan Athletic, with one of those changes seeing summer signing Alex Pritchard handed his debut.

Pritchard had missed the entirety of pre-season due to Covid and then a stomach bug, but he started against Port Vale in the EFL Cup.

He was one of two debutants, the other being youngster Ellis Taylor who also came into midfield.

Only centre-back Tom Flanagan, left-back Dan Neil, and midfielder Luke O'Nien were retained from the side that started against Wigan.

Anthony Patterson started in goal at Vale Park, with Ollie Younger at right-back and with Bailey Wright coming in to partner Flanagan.

Jack Diamond came into the side, as did Josh Hawkes, with Aiden O'Brien up front.

The men to make way were Lee Burge, Carl Winchester, Callum Doyle, Corry Evans, Lynden Gooch, Elliot Embleton, Aiden McGeady, and Ross Stewart.

Tonight's line-up:

Sunderland: Patterson, Younger, Wright, Flanagan, Neil, O'Nien, Pritchard, Taylor, Diamond, O'Brien, Hawkes.

Subs: Burge, Evans, Doyle, Gooch, Stewart, Grigg, McGeady

Port Vale: Stone, Jones, Walker, Legge, Smith, Worrall, Garrity, Wilson, Benning, Proctor, Pett.

Subs: Gibbons, Hurst, Johnson, Martin, Amoo, Cass, Bailey

with big sam returning to management, I have been thinking, and I know this is retarded, he is the best man for the job. I am too tired to elaborate, however.

Somehow simply not going to the game tonight. Couldn't be arsed sorting a ticket out. First time I've missed a home game for little reason in years.

36 Name: Anonymous 2021-08-10 20:08
On a slightly unrelated note, very depressing to see this on the scores tonight.

Let's hope this never happens down here. I know we have the U21s in the Shit Pizza Trophy, but to be actually labelled "B" just doesn't feel right at all.

Allams are arseholes that have again denied BBC Radio Humberside from broadcasting Hull City games, even though barely anyone can use iFollow this season
so I'm having to listen to Scunthorpe v Barrow with rare updates from the City v Wigan game

It's no different to our U21s in the Watching Paint Dry trophy then
41 Name: Anonymous 2021-08-10 20:12
The Scottish Challenge Cup is a total meme, they normally invite 2 teams each from the Welsh league, both Ireland leagues and the (English) National League too. I think TNS or Connahs Quay got to like the semis one year lel

True.

Once the wonderfully named Tunnock's Caramel Wafers Challenge Cup

>>41
Yes, they even had Sutton & Wrexham in it one year. Looks like they've dumped that, thankfully.
