Lincoln City vs Sunderland [League One - Play Offs First Leg]

1 Name: 606 2021-05-19 17:30
Lincoln City vs Sunderland [18:00]

It's a huge match for the Black Cats, with the first leg of their play-off semi-final at Sincil Bank this evening, followed by the return leg at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

Lee Johnson's men are in confident mood, recording a 4-0 win at Lincoln earlier in the season.

Supporters are allowed inside Sincil Bank tonight, with 10,000 tickets sold for Saturday's second leg.

The winner will play either Oxford or Blackpool, with the latter recording a 3-0 first-leg win last night.

Russell Martin backs Sunderland's experience to be a 'real advantage'
Russell Martin believes Sunderland's experience will "be a real advantage" as they take on Lincoln City this evening.

The MK Dons boss says that while the expectancy at Sunderland is "huge", the Wearsiders have the players to deal with the occasion.

The Black Cats are unbeaten against Lincoln City this season and head into the tie refreshed after a few days off following their draw with Northampton Town on the final day of the season.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Martin said: "I think the expectancy is huge and it's something Lee Johnson has spoken about a lot since he came through the door.

"I think they've got a lot of players that have played at a higher level and who've been in this situation before."

Lincoln vs Sunderland team news as Johnson makes two changes
Lee Johnson made two changes to the side that started Sunderland's final game of the regular league season against Northampton Town.

After more than two months out with a broken bone in his foot, defender Tom Flanagan was passed fit and he came into the side for his first league start since the end of January.

Flanagan was expected to partner Bailey Wright in central defence, with Luke O'Nien shifting to right-back.
Conor McLaughlin made way for Flanagan, and was not even on the bench - presumably due to injury.

The other change saw Aiden McGeady return to the starting XI after recovering from a bruised foot, and he replaced Jack Diamond.

Striker Ross Stewart had been an injury doubt with a hamstring problem in the run-up to the game, but he was fit enough to be named amongst the subs.

Lincoln City XI:

Subs:

SAFC XI: Burge, Power, Flanagan, Wright, Hume, O'Nien, Scowen, Jones, McGeady, Gooch, Wyke

Subs: Matthews, Maguire, Diamond, Leadbitter, McFadzean, Winchester, Stewart

In all my travels, Sunderland has to be the saddest sleeziest place I have ever set foot in, and I've been to 4 African countries. The amount of poverty and degeneracy equals that of a pre soviet collapse small village.

I will be rooting for them today and forever

Lincoln got an emergency keeper because their #1 (himself on loan from West Brom) is out
it's the same lad that was emergency loaned to Peterborough and helped them go up automatically
he's also been loaned to Doncaster this season, and recalled to play for Stoke when they had a keeper crisis too

Didn't even think you could play for more than two teams in a season, like what happened with Ben Arfa. Bizarre.

University of Lincoln
started life as Hull Polytechnic, which opened a second campus in Lincoln, then closed the original one in Hull

Surprisingly grim

Just found out Lincoln's goal scorer was one of the Thai sex tape lads from Leicester

I think Netflix when they commissioned the series assumed that there would eventually be a fairy-tale ending where Sunderland return to the PL in an epic play-off final. It's not exactly followed that script though in the end.

Every season they bottle up right at the end.

Coventry, Leeds, Portsmouth, Bolton, Charlton etc all had similar years plummeting down the divisions after previously being Premier League mainstays. Many such cases. The size of the club works against them in these instances.

It was Sitton yeah, he didn't resign at half time though, he fired a player. And not just any player, a club legend who was making his 397th appearance for Orient.
