Sunderland vs Northampton Town [League One]

1 Name: 606 2021-05-09 11:52
Sunderland 0-0 Northampton Town [12:00 BST]

The Black Cats are aiming to finish in third place in the League One table, which in theory would give them a slight advantage in the play-offs.

To do so, they must better Blackpool's result today, but at least Lee Johnson and Co know they have a play-off place booked.

Charlie Wyke and Aiden McGeady could return to the starting line-up today, although Johnson must balance fitness concerns ahead of the two-legged semi-finals later this month.

Sunderland vs Northampton team news - Charlie Wyke starts for Black Cats.

With Sunderland already guaranteed a play-off spot and Northampton already relegated, Lee Johnson could have taken the opportunity to rest key players and give a run-out to some youngsters.

But instead he made just one change to the side that won at Plymouth Argyle last weekend.

Leading scorer Charlie Wyke missed the trip to Home Park with a thigh injury but he returned to the starting XI, taking the place of Ross Stewart.

Stewart, who scored the first goal at Plymouth and was one of the Black Cats' star men, was not even amongst the subs, presumably missing out due to injury.

Aiden McGeady was absent at Plymouth due to a bruised foot, but he was included on the bench today.

SAFC XI: Burge, McLaughlin, Wright, O'Nien, Hume, Power, Scowen, Jones, Gooch, Diamond, Wyke

Substitutes: Matthews, Maguire, O'Brien, Leadbitter, McFadzean, Winchester, McGeady

Northampton Town XI: Mitchell, McWilliams, Horsfall, Jones, Harriman, Morris, Watson, Hoskins, Marshall, Miller, Rose

Substitutes: Woods, Bolger, Roberts, Cross, Ashley-Seal, Jones, Chukwuemeka

Why no Stewart? Close to man of the match last week and not even in the squad?

The media only care for the PL and even then it's just the top 6.

Not Top six, sorry. The "Big Six". Can guarantee the media will love it if Leicester implode and West Ham shit the bed to fall out of the CL. Arsenal are fucked mind so one of those two will get that coveted last Euro spot anyway.

Hoping to see a repeat of Sunderland bottling the playoffs.

Just so difficult to see Arsenal or Tottenham improve from where they are now as some mid-table clubs improve massively year to year. Leicester aren't dropping off, West Ham and Aston Villa and even Leeds can yet improve
13 Name: Anonymous 2021-05-09 12:03
Why are Sunderland still taking the nigger criminal Knee before the game, horrible.

I think it's good. Think about it. Shitters like Arsenal and Spurs and whatever are dumped into a meme competition (though Arsenal aren't even in that LOL) and then they play some minnows who get a big pay day playing the 'Big Six'. Which helps them. I like that. I also like seeing different teams. So I think it's a good idea for other teams around the continent.

But Arsenal are so bad they won't make that. Liverpool might nick Top 4 (I hope not) and Spurs I doubt it but they get EL over Arsenal so they're happy.

If you're an Oxford fan, you shouldn't need to worry. This squad is absolutely dire, Jackett made a complete mess of it. It needs some serious tearing up over the summer. Even if we kept the playoff spot we'd instantly lose the semis.

Kino season
Mad how the three teams that got promoted found themselves back in League 1 since but have had wildly contrasting fortunes
Hull up to the Prem a couple of times, us largely in the Championship and Luton fell down as far as the Conference (although that -30 was very, very harsh I thought)
Some decent sides that year, remember being delighted when Tranmere lost the playoff semis as I was convinced they'd batter us
76 Name: Anonymous 2021-05-09 13:00

For me it was when we pasted Tranmere, injured both their goalkeepers and Theo Whitmore ended up in goal for them lol

https://www.bwfc.co.uk/news/2017/may/have-your-picture-taken-with-the-league-one-runners-up-trophy-this-saturday/
Doing my research, they presumably give trophies to 2nd place in Champ/League One and 2nd and 3rd who go up automatically in League Two

They use the same trophy for everything except the Championship winners, league cup and EFL trophy, the lazy bastards
78 Name: Anonymous 2021-05-09 13:02
>>76
That was brilliant. Big promotion six-pointer sometime around Christmas, 1-0 at half-time and both their keepers injured, then utterly raped them in the second half. The penalty that got smashed past Theo was a highlight for me

I was only 12 at the time and didn't really have a sense of rivalry or wanting other Yorkshire teams to fail, but I was gutted when Hartlepool lost to Wednesday. I remember watching it with my dad in the local pub, whilst having a J2O and a bag of Scampi Fries. For some reason I remember Hartlepool losing 6-4 to Wrexham that year too, and some random Spaniard called Juan Ugarte scored five

It's geet worryin that iv the fowa currently in the laik off spots, wuh are in the worst form. geet reminiscent iv the ross team, that wuh are see dependent on mcgeady in this shape. wuh nee't 09 in midfield, cos wuh lyeuk deed in thor. i divvint leek the shape wuh are playin. wyke withyeut aob hasn't worked an' isn't neeo. last week hez probably proved that stewart leads the line bettor on eez ahn.

Oxford lost like 70% of their first 10 games. Had they won those, they'd have been 1st. Even if they had only won 3 of those, they'd be home and dry in the Play Offs.
