Hull City vs Sunderland [League One]

Hull City vs Sunderland [18:45]

The Black Cats' automatic promotion hopes have taken a serious blow with three consecutive defeats, but they can send a clear message to their play-off rivals that they're still the team to beat in this promotion race.

Leaders Hull can win promotion tonight if results go their way, but for Lee Johnson and Co it's about keeping their slender top-two hopes alive and at the very least rediscovering their form ahead of the play-offs.

Former Sunderland captain George Honeyman is expected to be fit to face his old side tonight.

Last time the two sides met: Sunderland 1-1 Hull City match report - McGeady header spares Lee Burge's blushes.

Sunderland dropped two more points at the Stadium of Light as they were held to a draw by promotion rivals Hull City.

An error by goalkeeper Lee Burge – who was perhaps suffering the after-effects of an earlier head injury which later saw him substituted – allowed Reece Burke to put the Tigers in front inside the opening quarter-of-an-hour.

But the Black Cats levelled through an Aiden McGeady header midway through the half, with the former Republic of Ireland international scoring his first goal since November 2019.

Tom Eaves rattled the crossbar with a header for Hull before the break and also brought a fine save out of Burge, while Sunderland’s best chance to win the game came just before the hour when Charlie Wyke was unable to apply the finish to a Max Power cross.

Sunderland have now drawn three League games in a row – and six of their last eight – and have won just one of their last nine matches.

Sunderland need a win tonight to consolidate their place in the play-offs while also chipping away at the gap between themselves and leaders Hull.

The Tigers can seal automatic promotion this evening with a win.

SAFC XI: Burge, Power, Wright, O'Nien, McFadzean, Scowen, Leadbitter, Winchester, Gooch, Jones, Wyke

And naturally the EFL have had their say on the ESL nonsense: https://www.efl.com/news/2021/april/efl-statement-european-super-league/

At least they're against the fucking thing this time unlike the Project Big Picture debacle.

Yeah, I was fucking numbed by it on Sunday when I saw it appear. If it happens, no club in the EFL will ever get into the ESL if they're promoted to the PL. Yes, not even Sunderland.
9 Name: Anonymous 2021-04-20 18:11
Fuck Newcastle scum. They should fuck off to ESL along with their faggy new Muslim puppet masters.

We should run a mini club championship in England for 16 championship teams. Top 3 get promotion. Winner gets prize money.

Would be a kino as fuck summer.
