How different were these species compared to us?

1. Homo Neanderthalis actually had a larger brain than us. It was differently constructed though. They would have been quite intelligent, but different.

2. Female Hybrids were actually fertile. The presence of Neanderthal DNA in Europeans (or Denisovan in Souh-East-Asians, etc.) means there has been a continual line including non homo-sapien DNA. Females of most hybrid species are either completely fertile, or more often partially fertile. Partial here means that most children would be misscariages or non viable but some would survive.

3. And to your last question, yes. There's no reason to assume they were not. Even late era Homo Erectus would have seemed human to us, although a bit dim and lazy.

Probably not that different. The general consensus is that we interbred with them in Western Europe, and caucasians probably emerged as a result of that interbreeding.

Me again:

I think this article will answer 90% of your questions. It underlies the differences in brain structure and the implications for, among others, their visual and social percepction.

Probably every bit as smart as us, just born during an era where you had to make absolutely everything from scratch. Probably had better teeth from non-sugary diet. Probably lived as long as the oldest current day humans, when they were lucky enough not to get injured or infected.

Also, every depiction of early humans shows them as dirty and unkempt. This is probably completely untrue and a meme from 1900's science. Healthy animals like looking good, and grubby, sick looking creatures don't tend to get selected to reproduce.

White people still have that caveman mentality.

"me better than you. Me kill you. take your stuff."

Just go to australia and interact with the aboriginals. They're basically prehistoric people living in a modern world.
