Why as a people are we so polarized?

I'm not a murderer. I can't support the right wing because I don't want to kill anyone. I won't do it. It's immoral. And right wing worldviews are predicated on success through the extermination of other groups and I don't support that perspective, I think that genetics aside, I can take the same test as a black person and it would come down to me vs him, not black vs white. People are polarized because one side has become so extreme that to support them means supporting actual murders of people I don't have any problem with.

Its so because almost everybody nowadays has an internet connection and behind the keyboard can everybody become a hero. Everybody wants to be special and everybody is nowadays selfish so pepole are behaving according to that. Few years ago only schools, big companies and army had the opportunity to have a connection.

read ted kaczynski.
nobody at the edges of the spectrum would admit it, but it's neither about idealism nor about ideology, it's about power. we live in a world where individuals have less and less power of their lives, and the less intelligent ones tend to blindly adhere to some kind of group think to at least simulate some kind of regaining of the power they lack.

Because politics is a team sport. It has been Red vs. Blue for so long no one even knows what they're fighting for anymore. It is blatantly obvious that the people in congress give ZERO fucks about the people in the US. This whole wall thing is a prime example. It seems like everyone has fucking forgotten how the congress works.
Congress needs to fund the government. Literally their ONLY job. So, rather than doing that, they go "Let's just pass a bill for the 30th time that continues what the previous congress did so we don't actually have to do anything." Everyone says ok. Trump goes "No, fuck you guys. Do your job. We need funding for these 10 things that you haven't funded in 30 years. I'm not signing it."
Crying begins. Meanwhile, none of the 500 of them realize that all they need to do is out vote him by 2/3rds if he's "So, horrible that he needs to be impeached!" But instead of overriding the veto, they all went home and left it up to the new congress to fix while Trump stayed in DC for two weeks.

WE HAVE TO PROTECT OUR PHONY BALONEY JOBS!

I think OP's post says more about OP than it does anyone else.
You tend to hear the idiots who are shouting the loudest and that tends to be the radicals of either side of the spectrum.
Anyone with a firm head on their shoulders doesn't support a side wholeheartedly, even the politicians in their respective parties don't honestly get along on every subject.

honest answer

the quality of life has declined for over 30 years now. people are pissed about it. it's a lot harder to make it in america today than for a 25 or 30 year old than it was 50 years ago. massive inflation and stagnating wages make even a modest life that they grew up in unobtainable. Some blame the right, some blame the left, but everyone is looking for an answer and refuses to accept that they are partially at fault. fringe extremist groups are the individuals response to mega corporations and corrupt political officials having massive unchecked power.

The real solution is smaller government and actual competition in free markets, but no one wants to hear that, they'd rather listen to their favorite crook in washington talk about hot button shit that doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things like healthcare or gun control. if you fixed the core issue the other problems like jamal murdering tyron over crack because they can't get jobs and fat bobby having a bill for a heart attack because it's cheaper for him to buy mcdonalds than a salad would resolve themselves for the majority of people.

tl;dr, peoples lives suck a lot more in america than they did a couple generations ago, we work harder but have less, and instead of blaming our idiot political system and lack of an actual capitalistic economy we turn to fringe groups who just make the problem worse.

I have to agree with you. Tumblr and lounge/ both judge people based on group identity, not individual merit. The only difference is what identities they like and don't like. They're 2 sides of 1 coin.

as far as I understand there are several factors contributing to this including several cognitive biases and logical fallacies. The most important are:
- Source amnesia. You see or hear a statement like "women are paid 20% less than men for the same amount of work", assign some credibility to the source but forget it.
Also most people feel like they don't have the time to at least try to understand the logic behind this statement and how these statistics are calculated.

- Fundamental Attribution error & basic statistics: many people aren't aware of the math and how easy it is to get statistics wrong (I'm talking about the math discipline).

At the very least we should demand the research to be reproducible if it affects policies.

- Sociology has developed into a pseudo-science, unfortunately and the universities with focus on humanities are becoming more ideological institutions rather than scientific.

This is a real threat for the whole civilization several reasons.

Because moderate views can't change anything and end up being corrupted by the current hierarchy.
