Why as a people are we so polarized?

1 Name: Anonymous 2019-01-03 03:37
Serious discussion point here /newpol/. Why as a people are we so polarized? Why does it seem like nobody wants to use facts or logic anymore? They seem to just immediately go to the extreme end of the spectrum and immediately believe whatever nonsense their side puts out without so much of an attempt to do their own research into a particular subject. For instance, If the jews are really the ones controlling the liberals and dems to make room for theyre greater state or whatever the fuck, why then are 2 of the biggest right wingers (Ben Shapiro and Dennis Prager) openly Jewish? On the opposite side if dems and liberals are so "progressive" why do they denounce basic scientific reasoning like medical practice in trade for "alternative meds" like homeopathy and essential oils that have no proven medical value? What can we do to make the world use more logic in its decision making? And finally is this extreme polarization happening just in the US or the world as a whole? And if it is what can we do to stop it?

I'm not a murderer. I can't support the right wing because I don't want to kill anyone. I won't do it. It's immoral. And right wing worldviews are predicated on success through the extermination of other groups and I don't support that perspective, I think that genetics aside, I can take the same test as a black person and it would come down to me vs him, not black vs white. People are polarized because one side has become so extreme that to support them means supporting actual murders of people I don't have any problem with.

Kek, you obviously don't understand IQ tests and statistics. No one will fucking touch the issue because they get denounced by the radical left and most of society for speaking the truth, but Africans score lowest on IQ tests than any other race.

YES. It is a fact. One group of enthic jews score highest, on average, followed by chinese, then it's whites(western europeans), and then all the other races, then blacks.

Right wing people don't want to kill people, you stupid fuck. You are either a left wing ideolouge or a nigger.

Ok but what about peoples right to defend themselves? For instance liberals want to altogether ban the 2nd amendment but doing so could cost thousands of lives. The right while wrong about many many things, seems to be the only side trying to protect that right. But on the exact same side you have people denying hundreds of years of research onto evolution in favor of their "God" that they "feel" is there.

You need to expand your understanding of what christanity has to teach. If you look at it from a psychological perspective it suddenly all makes sense.

Seriously my dude, I was you a year ago, google Jordan B Peterson and his Biblical Lectures on Youtube. He goes through the bible chapters and analyses them pyschologically. It will change your world view on what these 'republicans' think.... because even if they don't realise it (or are smart enough to know) they are following a seriously smart moral message wrapped up in mysticism.

To clarify why is each side using some logic for one issue but then all other logic goes down the tube when it comes to another ( i.e. Right wings protecting second amendment rights but ignoring scientific evidence in support of their "god" and vice versa Liberals supporting a need to address climate change but at the same time saying GMO foods and Vaccines cause problems that there is no scientific eveidence to back up.)

You're missing the point. Its show the fact that while all the groups have very different views. They are so dug into those views that they think individual rights should be taken away in favor of them.

JP is the furthest thing from being indoctrinated. The most I could criticise him for in the last year is becoming too polished in his answers and not risking much by talking more in depth about some of the topics he is asked about. He is very much protecting and projecting a polished public image. Now I know why he needs to do that (because people like you libel him left and right), but I liked rawer JP.

However, because of JP's wisdoms I've learnt, I will hear you out, cite the areas and how he is ""indoctrinated''''. But I believe you are probably a left ideologue who has no real thoughts of their own so you can not give a single example of what you claim, and thus you will never reply with anything of substance.

Kek, I opened this, and I've actually watched this in full. The entire discussion, and I have to say that Harris had his ass handed to him. He simply lacks the imagination to understand or conceptualise what JP is talking about. Obviously you do too.

JP read Jung. Because of JP I have read Jung too. I am not flexing, but reading Jung, REALLY reading him changes your perspective on everything. JP even chastises Harris and Dawkins in a presentation they did recently on Memes, saying that they jokingly admitted that Memes might be related to biology and not just """"mind viruses"""" before backing far away. FYI Jung spoke largely on Archetypes and how they are at the root of the human experience.

It's essentially a deeper, more articulated, and thought out explanation of 'memes'. And I have looked into a lot of Dawkins works, and frankly, I was disappointed because somone of such renowned clearly hasn't done his research.
15 Name: Anonymous 2019-01-04 00:12
My problem is that there are so many fucking idiots that latch onto the rumblings of anyone 5 IQ points higher than them that Dawkins and Harris are looked at like gods. Whereas, JP who is smarter than both of them, or at least more wise, looks to people like Jung who is inarguably still the prominent mind of our time and has a grasp of psychology that the rest of humanity is barely able to even be next too yet.

Its so because almost everybody nowadays has an internet connection and behind the keyboard can everybody become a hero. Everybody wants to be special and everybody is nowadays selfish so pepole are behaving according to that. Few years ago only schools, big companies and army had the opportunity to have a connection.

You're doing the same thing. JP isn't that smart and if what he talks about is such a huge revelation to you, chanves are you're not that much smarter than your average joe. Not saying that's a bad thing. Just don't create an ego around "understanding" JP. It makes me cringe.

Both sides of your argument are playing the same identity politics game.
If you go "black people are inferior therefore affirmative action" or "women are inferior therefore something" but also go "white people are superior therefore you're evil" or "non-vegans cause pollution so tax" etc there's this infinite number of little groups.
You're just saying "you're right wing so that's bad" but "I don't play identity politics so that's good". You're still playing identity politics. If you break everyone down into some kind of declarative identity then you can ALWAYS find a reason to put someone in jail for a 'made up' reason.

So, no offense, but based on your reading comprehension I'm going to delimit what you wrote by a fair bit since I wrote that it was Jung who was pre-emminent, and even JP gives his dues to him, and it was his work I found revealing.

Jung was extremely wrong. You literally just have to go to his wikipedia page and look under criticisms to see that almost the entire psychological community frowns down on him. And while this isnt really evidence of him being wrong. Lets not forget that he was a student under Freud who thought that Cocaine was basically a psychological cure all and would often give it as a gift on bdays and holidays... To children.

Jung also believed in a lot of mysticism in the brain but we can prove, through neurological experiments, that the brain is subject to the same physical laws as everything else in the universe. Meaning there is nothing mystic about it and that we are the exact same as every other living creature other than a slightly higher brain capacity.

his wikipedia page
Okay, I read the rest of your reply, so I won't comment on wikipedia a source....
...while this isnt really evidence of him being wrong
Exactly. As I already said, most people can't fathom his line of thinking. I don't think he is wrong, it's simply that most people can't even Read his body of works, they have some sort of internal defense mechanism that goes NO THANK YOU>>>> TOO SCARY and then stop. Dawkins is popular with 'memes' because it is digestible. He says 'mind virus' and you go: "I know what a virus is, I've had those, and I think I know what my mind is, that makes sense!". And Jung talks about Archetypes and it is so deep people freak out and then ignore or ridicule it.

Lets not forget that he was a student under Freud
He expanded on a lot of Freuds works and also criticised him extensively where he thought Freud was wrong. (again, you may not know this since you have the depth of a wikipedia article behind you in your claims). However, Jung also experimented in drugs to expand his consciousness, so I am not faulting Freud on expanding the realms of how we experience consciousness. Tbh, the West has absorbed so much of what Freud got right that most people forget what he contributed and only focus of what he got wrong. Most of what you think about the 'mind' can be attributed to Freud.

The bit about how you think if you were matched against an african it would be 1 on 1.
That's not how statistics work. You take a large data set, which accounts for outliers at either end, and gives you a mean score of where a racial ethnicity sits. Africans are lowest on every comparison.

Sorry, this isn't racist. It's a fucking fact.
No, I don't like poorly regulated low IQ people running around. Obviously it would be better if they weren't like that. But you could make the same arguments for gorillas or chimpanzees. It doesn't change the evolutionary scientific facts.

Mistaking the Brain for the Mind. Mistaking the brain for Consciousness.

Jung in his later years tied in 'spirituality' in the west to archetypes and how the mind evolves and the patterns it follows. It wasn't mysticism, except as labeled by his detractors.

No offense, but while there is overlay, the mind =/= the brain. You are deficient in your education and knowledge if you do not recognise this.

read ted kaczynski.
nobody at the edges of the spectrum would admit it, but it's neither about idealism nor about ideology, it's about power. we live in a world where individuals have less and less power of their lives, and the less intelligent ones tend to blindly adhere to some kind of group think to at least simulate some kind of regaining of the power they lack.

Because politics is a team sport. It has been Red vs. Blue for so long no one even knows what they're fighting for anymore. It is blatantly obvious that the people in congress give ZERO fucks about the people in the US. This whole wall thing is a prime example. It seems like everyone has fucking forgotten how the congress works.
Congress needs to fund the government. Literally their ONLY job. So, rather than doing that, they go "Let's just pass a bill for the 30th time that continues what the previous congress did so we don't actually have to do anything." Everyone says ok. Trump goes "No, fuck you guys. Do your job. We need funding for these 10 things that you haven't funded in 30 years. I'm not signing it."
Crying begins. Meanwhile, none of the 500 of them realize that all they need to do is out vote him by 2/3rds if he's "So, horrible that he needs to be impeached!" But instead of overriding the veto, they all went home and left it up to the new congress to fix while Trump stayed in DC for two weeks.

WE HAVE TO PROTECT OUR PHONY BALONEY JOBS!

honest answer

the quality of life has declined for over 30 years now. people are pissed about it. it's a lot harder to make it in america today than for a 25 or 30 year old than it was 50 years ago. massive inflation and stagnating wages make even a modest life that they grew up in unobtainable. Some blame the right, some blame the left, but everyone is looking for an answer and refuses to accept that they are partially at fault. fringe extremist groups are the individuals response to mega corporations and corrupt political officials having massive unchecked power.

The real solution is smaller government and actual competition in free markets, but no one wants to hear that, they'd rather listen to their favorite crook in washington talk about hot button shit that doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things like healthcare or gun control. if you fixed the core issue the other problems like jamal murdering tyron over crack because they can't get jobs and fat bobby having a bill for a heart attack because it's cheaper for him to buy mcdonalds than a salad would resolve themselves for the majority of people.

tl;dr, peoples lives suck a lot more in america than they did a couple generations ago, we work harder but have less, and instead of blaming our idiot political system and lack of an actual capitalistic economy we turn to fringe groups who just make the problem worse.

Just to prove my point lets do a thought experiment with God as the subject.
So Jung and JP believe god is real and the bible is a metaphorical book that proves that our collective conscious comes from and is evidence for god or some other Omnipotent creator. This is fallacious in that it is a cyclical fallacy. You are using 2 conclusions to prove eachother without evidence for either. I.E. achetypes exist therfore god and god exists therefore achetypes and collective consciousness exist.

But Nazism would have killed just as much had it not been stopped. Also if you really think about it, Nazism is self sustained socialism (only the country is socialist and for the "greater good" of a particular people) and communism is suplosed to be a worldwide revolution. ( the world is socialist and all peoples are working towards the "greater good") this means that both are leftist socialist ideologies. Meaning both antifa and alt rights are in reality pushing a leftist agenda.

as far as I understand there are several factors contributing to this including several cognitive biases and logical fallacies. The most important are:
- Source amnesia. You see or hear a statement like "women are paid 20% less than men for the same amount of work", assign some credibility to the source but forget it.
Also most people feel like they don't have the time to at least try to understand the logic behind this statement and how these statistics are calculated.

- Fundamental Attribution error & basic statistics: many people aren't aware of the math and how easy it is to get statistics wrong (I'm talking about the math discipline).

At the very least we should demand the research to be reproducible if it affects policies.

- Sociology has developed into a pseudo-science, unfortunately and the universities with focus on humanities are becoming more ideological institutions rather than scientific.

This is a real threat for the whole civilization several reasons.

This is a crucial point since Feminists and other leftist ideologues are using social constructs to explain the world with skewed and invalid statistics if they provide any.
Gender studies is the major ideological "discipline" that is being pushed in all western countries right now. Fortunately Poland and Hungary are trying to stay strong in this regard.

- Self described victims like to take what the can get (women, minorities). The issue here is that they're not aware of the depth of the ideology that they're ready to adopt just to make seemingly make it better for women or minorities.
I have the feeling that LGBTIQ people don't really care. Trans people have high suicide rates and are mentally ill.
They'd rather everything go down if it meant a better life for them. Here is a good vid on this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgNt1C72B_4

There are several more points but I have to go now. Reproducible research is definitely the most important point we should strive for

I'd also recommend reading
"White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism"
and the comments on goodreads.

It gives a good insight to how these people think and how easy it is to put pressure on whites by using guilt

You're right but how do we fix???? It's not enough to state facts that no one wants to believe without an answer to the solution. The fact that no one has a solution is the whole reason no one pays us attention. No one wants a problem without an answer.

in what way?

Regarding the whole "paradox of tolerance" thing, left-libertarians and anarchist and other antifa-affiliated ideologies aren't against "free speech" as in the concept of state/private power being used to curtail an individual's right to say something. They mark out a difference, however, between "free speech" and "protected speech", and think people shouldn't have a guarantee to protected speech if they don't use it for meaningful discussion (go look up On Bullshit for what "meaningful discussion" means. No, it's not just "leftie opinions").

Regarding the "hate speech" thing, identity politics groups usually DO support a form of state/private coercion when it comes to preventing performative speech that has an actively harmful effect on others. For example, saying that black people aren't humans isn't just a sterile opinion one can have in a neutral debate. The very act of placing someone's personhood up for debate is dehumanizing and can lead to real psychological and social harm, and is thus a form of violence.

I am not saying I agree or side with with these viewpoints, merely explaining the basic arguments.

I can't speak for the US, but in the EU this is absolute horse shit. Anyone with a different opinion is targeted regardless of why. Simply having a political sticker to the contrary (like afd) is enough to get your windows broken and car burned out because obviously you're a nazi, no matter the reason why you'd vote for them.

You completely missed my point which addressed that point. Check mate, fucking cuck who never articulated his point in anything but general ''lefty'' fucking ramblings. How is that horse shit? Someone breaking your car window because of a shitty bumper sticker is quite different from the state exercising its power to silence you, that is just you facing the consequences of your speech.

from the top:
"free speech" = institutions do not censor you or actively prosecute you for your speech
"protected speech" = institutions actively shield you from the consequences of your speech.

left-libertarian groups tend to always support the former, but oppose having the latter for what they consider propaganda.

Perhaps you should spend time in Germany.
Broken windows are the start. If they find your name, employer and all the rest, they'll spam your workplace with accusations of nazism, rape etc. because of your affiliation.
Does that sound like simply marking a difference?

None of those are valid arguments for curtailing free speech. and even if they were, look at how "hate speech" has been implemented. it's about suppressing opposing political opinions, nothing more. which is exactly the fucking opposite of free speech.

someone breaking your car window isn't a violent attempt to suppress or curtail someone's liberty? so when a group of guys in white burned a cross on my great grandmother's lawn, that was just her facing the consequences of her speech?

If you're talking about Germany, you could use one of the actual anti-nazi speech laws on the books there, because that IS a an actual infringement on free speech rights, and left-libertarians tend to oppose that sort of thing (look up what Chomsky has to say about censoring far-right groups, for example).

It is, again, still different from people responding to the things you have said. You are implying that you should be shielded from the actions of other people as a response to your speech, which is a fair position to take, but left-libertarian groups would say you SHOULDN'T be afforded that protection if your are exercising your speech in an anti-productive manner.

>>90
The first part isn't even an "argument for curtailing free speech", it's a simple summation of what left-libertarian groups actually oppose when they engage in things like deplatforming.

As for the second, identity politics stance, your response is basically a tautology. Those are "invalid arguments" because they simply aren't. The proof? The idea that it's suppressing opposing political opinions. Well no shit, sherlock? The entire point is that certain "political opinions" are actively harmful, and the mere act of holding them is damaging towards other people.

>>91
There's a qualitative difference between opposing someone for being a Nazi and opposing someone for being black. No KKK riot ever burned crosses on a black person's front yard for voicing certain opinions - they burned those crosses as an attack on their very BEING.
The only way to stop radical lefties from suppressing your speech is to stop using that speech to spread reactionary propaganda. The only way to stop far-rightist from suppressing your speech is to stop existing altogether. There's a real difference between the two.

bullshit, it's about suppressing opposing political opinions, nothing less. the claim that it's only about suppressing "harmful" opinions is a lie, because the definition of harmful is distorted to associate anyone on the opposing side with the worst extreme possible, while completely ignoring or whitewashing harmful behavior on your own side. just look at how widely "Nazi" is used to today. or hell, that it's used at all. it's a dead ideology.

and there are no harmful opinions. even someone with the most hateful and bigoted ideas isn't hurting anyone, until they take action.
