Can somebody redpill me on Steve Vai? He is undoubtedly a remarkable technical player, but his music sounds so soulless to me....

Same here, he knows the scales and can go through them fast but that's it.

he suffers from what all extremely technical musicians suffer from. at some point, the music becomes about masturbating and having someone watch and less about making something sound good. there is a breaking point where technicality loses musicality and it becomes an exercise/drill for practicing.

Amazing musician but I have only listened to passion and warfare which I really like.

This is all you need to know his ability to play is incredible. If you listen multiple times, you'll find this song gets deeper and deeper. It's incredible musically. If you don't know music, you can enjoy it.

Listening to it now. It's like he can't get to the point or something. Like, his melodies don't lead anywhere or just seem contrived and boring.

How does "knowing music" augment your ability to appreciate it? I've seen this argument when it comes to classical music. Genuine question; not trying to be a dick.

I like his early stuff most when he had some great melodies in his arsonal. flexable, passion and warfare and alien love secrets era which were better produced and mixed and his guitar tone was actually ok.
his latter stuff seems mostly too cluttered and without strong song hooks and melodies. a few gems occasionally though.
same can be said for satch too. very hot and miss albums for well over a decade. terrible guitar tone and production also. the odd nice tune here and there. better live versions actually.

So, if you know a lot about the different modes, then you can appreciate when a song makes certain transitions, which notes are being played over which chords and why etc. There's almost a mathematical beauty to it.

If you are one of those faggots pretentious enough to actually believe some musician give "soul" to their music you need to be fucking shot and killed, including any children you may have had.

If you are one of those faggots pretentious enough to actually not recognize that soul is synonymous with interesting when describing music, you need to be fucking shot and killed, including any children you may have had. I obviously don't think music can be imbued with a soul. Fucking retard looking for something to be pissed off about.

These dudes basically explain what your talking about. When people say "soul", they just mean blues influence in music.

Imagine willingly limiting your own music experience and missing out on a lot of good music because of some arbitrary definitions of genres that noboy gives a shit about except for (you).
