What would happen if half of the world got infected with Coronavirus/COVID-19 (3.5 billion people)?

99.98% survival rate

We'd have less healthcare costs as a nation because anyone not strong enough to survive a flu would be dead

Then we can finally institute some kinda of public health care now that the fatties and asthmatics are gone

I could get my groceries in peace

The rest of the world would be fine because all the fatties and asthmatics died already from years upon years of war, pestilence and famine thruout history

Bad things. If we assume that 1% of the infected died, and 25% of the infected were effected significantly, we'd be looking at around an 8th of the pop.

Historically, civilizations enter a state of near collapse at around 15% casualties, but these were peasant economies with a large number of essentially interchangeable parts.

In a modern society with specialized workers, we'd realistically see a state of near collapse at about 5% of the population.

Near collapse is very different from collapsed. As an example, the Roman Empire was in a state of near collapse for about a thousand years before it fell completely.

Post-Czar Russian was in a state of collapse for about 40 years before it recovered, and then later dipped back into near collapse.

So it'd be bad.
