Use common sense and get an ad blocker
The ad blocker does a lot more than just block ads, it block malicious URLs and keeps the shit from getting on your PC in the first place.

Also get things like no script which will also shut down lots of the ways a virus gets inside your system.

Don't open attachments on emails you don't trust

Don't download sketchy files or torrents

Don't let friends stick USB sticks in your machine. Seriously, tons of viruses are spread via USB.

Well, if you're running Windows 7, Microsoft Security Essentials, AVG Free edition, or ZoneAlarm's free Antivirus-Firewall combination are good.

Some of the others store their virus definitions on a "cloud" server; so if, for some reason, your machine can't access the cloud server, then you're screwed--and your computer. too.

If you're running Windows 10, then Microsoft's Windows Defender, AVG Free edition, or ZoneAlarm's free Antivirus-Firewall combination are good.

If you're running Windows XP Pro, or XP Mode from Windows 7 Virtual Machine, then AVG's free antivirus-firewall combination for Windows XP is good.

exactly, which is why I also suggested noscript which will prevent lots of malicious scripts from running and installing shit.

Foolish people are learning why the rest of us make regular backups and/or don't run windows. I'm on Mint 18 GNU+Linux and even I make regular backups.
