I once went into bookstore and asked for a book by Shakespeare, they asked "which one?" I replied ""William of course" .

Just think of this board as a kind of one-way portal for sending mocking hate-mail to a glowie Muse, and you won't be wrong. Sometimes you will even get replies in the form of threads posted by one who is easily triggered by that sort of thing.

A dark plot and violent progression of events.

I have just published a book about a very unlikable character with a dark plot and violent progression of events. I am new to the writing game. Ask me anything. Hit me with your worst.

What exactly makes this story enjoyable for the reader? Why should they keep reading? Is there some kind of payoff in the end, like they turn things around or they get what they deserve? Or is it supposed to be one of those pretentious edgy things with an ambiguous ending?

I don't think the very hungry caterpillar was recently published.

I disagree with that books premise. Europeans did not conquer the world because of diseases they brought and thier geographic location, Europeans were more advanced than everyone else simply because they had the Romans and Greeks to model thier kingdoms around. While the Greeks were chisseling statues of the gods and conquring the entire know world(Alexander's reign) the rest of humanity becides the Persians were building mudhuts and eating dirt. Europeans were rather backward for a few years after Rome died, but when colonialism hit so did joint stock companies and the rest is history, Europeans just flat out had superior ideas than the rest of the world. At least ideas that involve money and war, the Europeans counquered the world with just money and war.

"Fatherland" by Robert Harris.

It's a mystery novel set in an alternate timeline where nobody won World War 2. The TL:DR is that the Nazis win in Europe but America still defeats Japan.

The book as a genuinely interesting mystery, and does a fantastic job of world building. It really makes you believe that the world presented could have actually happened.
